Fall is starting to show up on the North Platte, and fishing is trending the right direction.
Cool nights have helped water temperatures across the system. Hoot Owl restrictions have also been lifted. For a hot, dry year across much of the West, the North Platte came through in pretty good shape.
A big thank you goes out to anglers who paid attention this summer. Many checked water temperatures and avoided fishing during the hottest periods. Others stayed away from sections when temperatures climbed. The fish appreciate it, too. Wyoming Game and Fish recognized the risks and acted early with protections.
On Grey Reef, hatches are shifting toward fall. PMDs are still around but no longer steal the show. Caddis patterns, worms, leeches, crawdads, and other junk flies have been productive. The upper end of the Reef has some grass, but it remains very fishable.
The Miracle Mile has been fishing similarly. Add tricos to the mix during morning hours. Caddis and worm patterns continue to produce. Expect the Mile to improve as cooler weather settles in.
Fremont Canyon still offers PMDs, caddis, leeches, and morning midge action. Mayhems and RS2s remain solid choices.
