Fishing on the Big Horn, Midges and BWOs

North Platte River Fishing Report (Grey Reef, Fremont Canyon, Miracle Mile) 10/24/22

North Platte River Fishing Report

Grey Reef, Fremont Canyon, Miracle Mile (10/24/22)

Also includes the Big Horn out of Thermopolis, WY

Grey Reef:

Flows- 453 CFS

Fishing Report- The upper portion of the Reef is coming back around. Moss is starting to break away due to the recent cool temperatures. Due to these temperatures, the fishing is a little slower in the morning but picks up around 10 AM. Midges are on the menu in the morning, while BWOs are most productive in the afternoon. If you are looking to fish dries, a Parachute Adams with a jig head Perdigon as a dropper has been the go-to set up. If you are looking to nymph, the Barr’s Flash Back Emerger BWO is a must have on your rig.

Miracle Mile:

Flows- 600 CFS

Fishing Report- Flows have been fluctuating about 100 CFS over the last few days but are currently steady at around 600. The Mile has been fishing well. Streamer fishing has been the go-to method, specifically throwing Rusty Trombones, Orange Blossom Specials, and (as per usual) Articulated Goldies. For all the two-handed anglers, now is the time to be at the Mile. Swinging leeches and streamers have proven to be productive over the last few days. If you are nymphing, midges have been consistent in the morning while BWOs have been working in the afternoon. Trout are slowly starting to move out of the reservoir, and there are some Kokanee in the system as well.

Fremont Canyon:

Flows- 70 CFS

Fishing Report- Fremont is still pretty off color due to the lake tuning over. BWOs, small black midges, and rock worms have been most productive on the nymph rig. Just a reminder that Kortes Road is under construction, so leave a little more room for travel time than usual.

The Big Horn:

Flows- 885 CFS

Fishing Report- The moss is starting to breakup on the Big Horn as well. Dries have still been working on days with little wind, but its best to focus subsurface on the windier days. As far as nymphing goes, BWOs, scuds/sows and midges are productive. The small streamer game has been working as well. Specifically Thin Mints and black Wooly Buggers with a cone head.
