Streamers come in thousands of shapes, colors and forms. Some recreating a sculpin with an amazing amount of detail and others that just look like a mass of hair and feathers. With so many options some could be overwhelmed with what to pick out to throw in their streamer box. However, one streamer is must for every anglers box; the good ole Rusty Trombone. Originally tied by Trent Tatum, The Rusty is arguably one of the most effective streamers for the North Platte, being a favorite here at the ugly bug since 2016. Not only is it an effective fly here on the Platte, but throughout the rest of Wyoming. I personally have had major success with it on the North and South Fork of the Shoshone and even the tongue river up by Sheridan. A fairly simple fly to tie, it resembles a small bait fish with its streamlined appearance and flash through its articulated body. Be sure to pick some up for your next adventure or watch our tying video to add some to your box.
