Hope you all had a great Fourth Weekend. Hard to believe it is close to mid-summer already. Fishing has continued to be good. The powers that be recently dropped the Reef to 1500’s (give or take). The Mile is at 1520, and Freemont is 82 cfs as of the 9th. Great time to be in Casper, the Fair and Rodeo is going on. Lots of music and events for après fishing fun. Summer in Wyoming is unbelievable and well worth the price of admission of getting through winter.
The Reef
The Reef has been consistently good. The menu includes PMD’s, caddis, yellow sallies and throw in the ever-present worms and leeches. Mostly bugs, but when in doubt, worms have their place. PMD patterns include Crusts, McGrubers, Splitbacks, Hunchbacks, and RS-2 (in PMD). Caddis patterns – Bird Nest in all the variations, White’s Caddie Shacks, should put you in the hunt. Sally patterns- Iron Sally, Jackson’s Sally, Kyle’s BH Sally. For those streamer folks out there, it has been alright and moving some fish on streamers as well.
The Mile
Similar hatches going on at the Mile, the addition would be stone flies are present right now. Some day to day, spot to spot potential on drys. If that is your preferred game. It takes covering a lot of real estate to find fish set up and looking. Mostly a nymphing game. More consistent action on the Reef, but the Mile has its’ rewards.
Fremont Canyon
Fremont has been good- small PMDs, some midge, and caddis. It has been nice to have normal flows this year as compared to what was going on up there last summer. Good reports and happy anglers as of late up there.
Bonus
For those that like freshwater flats fishing, the carp and our guided carp trips have been fishing well. Total landlocked “saltwater” style sight fishing. Fun stuff.
