Choose Your Vise: Renzetti Addition

Here we are mid-winter and settling in to “tying season”, and week two of our super fun, and informative “Tie-One- On Tuesdays” weekly fly-tying event hosted at Frontier Brewing.  For those getting into tying or looking at upgrading your vise this series of reviews should help pick the right one for your needs and budget.

Renzetti – This name has been a fly-tying standard for quality craftmanship, and durability since the late 70’s and that reputation continues today.

We currently carry two models at the shop, the Apprentice and the Traveler Series.

The Apprentice is a great entry level or budget friendly vise. It has the Renzetti craftsmanship in a basic no-frills package. Including a rotary head, and hardened jaws that adjust simply and can accommodate size #28 to #2. The hinged stem can be adjusted and also comes apart to make a small package to travel with.

The Traveler has been a standard for years and for the price and all the built-in features, is a hard one to beat for a great long-lasting, all-around vise that gets it done from tiny midges to big streamers and salt water offerings. True rotary design with slim, sleek trademark bent shaft that makes it easy for hands and tools to go to work tying comfortably and efficiently.  Bobbin cradles and cam jaws that easily accommodate size #28 all the way to 4/0 hooks.

Some notes on picking more specific Traveler options. Specify right or left hand. There are two pedestal options available. The 6×6 and the heavier and larger Streamer base. If you do plan on tying bigger flies, or the pedestal is more stationary and less traveling, the Streamer base might be for you. The extra weight does help with leverage on large flies or spinning deer hair. If you do travel a lot with your vise or tie mostly smaller trout flies, the 6×6 base might be more up your alley. For those that tie large flies and big Saltwater offerings, there are saltwater jaws available.

Renzetti also makes quality tools and some great tool bars, tool bar stands and material carousels to help organize and make tying more efficient with less scrounging around looking for materials and tools mid tie.  I you have any more questions about Renzetti, vises, tying or fishing in general we are always happy to help and talk fishing , so stop in or give us a shout. Better yet, come to Frontier next Tuesday and see and try some vises out first hand!
