Crazy Rainbow Fishing Report

North Platte River Fishing Report

(Grey Reef, Fremont Canyon, Miracle Mile) 08/01/2023

Grey Reef:

Flows- 2,194 CFS

Fishing Report- Due to Powerplant Maintenance, there is currently water flowing over the Alcova Dam spillway. This causes higher than normal water temperatures and can be dangerous for fish being caught in this area. Spillways pull the top level of water off of the reservoir which is approaching 70 degrees and can warm up as it flows down river. It is recommended that fishing be set to early in the morning and visiting some of our other great tailwaters. If fishing, check water temperatures throughout the day and try to do quick catch and releases. If temperatures hit 68 degrees or above it’s recommended that you hold off fishing until the water cools down.

Quick tip: Water temps 67 degrees or above fish can become very stressed (eating typically halts). 60-65 degrees, fish trout with heavier lines and focus on quick releases. 45-58 degrees is the ideal fishing temperature range, normal trout behavior (trout are actively eating and seeking food).

Flies: Wine San Juan Worms, Bird’s Nest Caddis, and Galloup’s Caddis, PMD’s, Yellow Sallies, Trico’s

Miracle Mile:

Flows- 1,727 CFS

Fishing Report- The Mile has been moving at around 1,700-1,800 CFS. The Mile is fishing well using worm PMD rigs. There has also been some luck on rock worms. Start with 4 ft to an AB or BB and adjust from there.

Flies: Wine San Juan Worms, Bird’s Nest Caddis, and Galloup’s Caddis, Rock Worms, PMD’s

Fremont Canyon:

Flows- 77 CFS

Fishing Report- Caddis, small black midges, and rock worms have been most productive on the nymph rig. Fishing has been good in this area.

Flies: Caddis, Black midges, Rock worms, Zebra midge, Trico, PMD’s

The Big Horn:

Flows- 1,968 CFS

Fishing Report- The Big Horn has been fishing very well lately. Barr’s Emerger, the Jackson MacGruber, and Caddis have all been productive on the nymph rig. If you are looking to get into some dry fly action, the Big Horn may be the best bet. Hoppers and hopper droppers have consistently been fishing well. Start with 4 ft to an AB or BB and adjust from there.

Flies: Hoppers, Crayfish, Worms, Caddis, PMD’s, Yellow Sallies
