October is historically a great time to fish the North Platte River, and this year is living up to that trend. Grey Reef has been fishing well as we shift from summer patterns to the fall menu.
PMDs are tapering off, while BWO and midge patterns are becoming more important. Caddis are still around, although the usual fall hatch has been lighter. Worms and leeches remain reliable staples alongside BWO and midge patterns. Streamer fishing can also produce. Smaller Thin Mint and bugger-style streamers seem to get more attention than bigger articulated patterns. Overall, fishing remains solid across most of the river system.
The Miracle Mile is starting to produce, though it can still be fickle. Try similar patterns to Grey Reef, and expect fishing to improve as fall progresses. Remember to respect spawning brown trout. Target feeding fish, not spawning beds. Let’s keep it classy and protect the next generation.
Fremont Canyon has also received some good reports. Midges and BWO patterns are producing most of the action. Dry fly opportunities vary daily, but these fish are still willing to look up.
