Right now on the North Platte, it’s pretty simple. Don’t overthink it.
A few patterns have really separated themselves lately, and if we had to narrow it down, these are our three favorite bugs in the box right now:
- The Little Green Machine has been a staple and continues to produce. It’s a proven nymph on our home water and one of our go-to flies for the North Platte, especially when fish are keyed in on smaller mayfly-style profiles.
2. Right behind it, the JRS CC Me Now has been getting eaten. This is a new fly in our bins from our very own John Robitaille. Similar to the JR’s we all know and love, this new color way has been producing. Perfect for pressured fish that have seen it all.
3. And of course, you can’t go wrong with Mayhem Midges. Midges are always in the system, and this pattern flat-out works. It’s a reliable way to stay in the game when things get technical.
Outside of those three, it’s no surprise that leeches and worms are still fishing well. They are a main protein source in the river year round, and fish rarely pass up an easy, high-calorie meal.
