Grey Reef Fly Fishing

Fishing Report 07/23/2026

July is flying by, and fishing has continued to hold up.

On the Grey Reef, flows are currently running at 2,200 CFS, and the morning Trico hatch has been nothing short of prolific. As the morning progresses, Pale Morning Duns take over before giving way to caddis and Yellow Sallies later in the day. On the subsurface side, leeches, worms, and crayfish patterns fished tight to the banks continue to produce. Streamer fishing has been decent as well, with smaller bugger-style patterns like a Thin Mint accounting for more fish than the larger offerings.

Water clarity closer to Casper remains off-color, and most of the consistent fishing has been taking place on the upper end of the river. In addition to clearer water, temperatures remain cooler closer to the dam, making it the better option during the current stretch of hot weather. As expected, fishing has been slowing down through the afternoon as water temperatures climb and the heat of the day sets in. Early starts are your friend right now, and anglers should continue to keep an eye on afternoon water temperatures and handle fish with care during these warmer conditions.

Fremont Canyon remains elevated at 1,564 CFS. We haven’t heard many reports from anglers fishing the canyon since flows were increased, so information remains limited. The Miracle Mile is currently flowing at 1,484 CFS and reports have been somewhat mixed. With Grey Reef fishing as well as it has been, much of the attention has shifted downstream. The Mile is seeing many of the same hatches as the Reef, including Tricos, PMDs, caddis, and Yellow Sallies. As always, give us a call or stop by the shop for the latest conditions and up-to-the-minute fishing reports. We’re always happy to help get you pointed in the right direction. Good luck out there and enjoy the rest of July.

In the spirit of warm weather fishing, we all know the Ugly Bug loves some carp. Check out our very own Dustin White chatting with Tom Rosenbauer about all things carp.
