Ugly Bugs and Crazy Ladies is an annual event catering specifically to women in the sport of fly fishing. Inspired by the Orvis 50/50 campaign, we wanted to give women some options for learning how to fish. Within an environment that mitigates an often-intimidating skill to learn. Through this progressive program, we have made the sport of fly fishing more accessible and comfortable for all women.
Did we mention this all takes place on the famous Grey Reef section of the North Platte River? That’s right! Learn to cast, tie knots, and flies. As well as read water and get familiar with entomology. Including, wade fish, and then guided during peak season. Choose the class that best suits your experience level and we will take care of the rest!
The 101 is perfect for beginners. Many lady anglers choose to participate in this course based on the time of year (nice weather) it is offered. Nothing like learning how to cast, tie flies, and fish in a relaxed environment and good weather!
First come first serve. Spots are filling quick, call the shop to book your spot!
Perfect for Women Anglers Ready to Start the Sport of Fly Fishing
Arrival Day 1
- 6:00-6:30pm Introductions and sign-in
- 6:30-7:30pm Walk to city park for a breakdown in the basic cast- Whether you are just learning or have years’ experience- we will meet you where you are at.
- 7:30-7:40pm Walk back to Ugly Bug Fly Shop
- 7:40-8:00pm Learn terminal gear, learn your way around a fly shop, talk fish handling and photo opps
Day 2
- 6:00-8:30ish Join us at the Ugly Bug Fly Shop for some cocktails and fly tying. This is a fan favorite with epic fishing stories and knot tying, while learning to tie some basic patterns that work on the Grey Reef.
Day 3
- 7:30am-3:30pm Full day guided fly fishing with Crazy Rainbow Fly Fishing’s professional guides
Requirements: fishing license and appropriate clothing (ball cap, sunscreen)

We bring in all of the heavy hitters and open our doors to the public. To come try out what our big-name brands have to offer. Not only is this a great way to get your hands on a multitude of rod and reel brands. As well as to find which rod and reel best suits you. It is also a great opportunity to try before you buy if you already have a set up in mind. We will spotlight one brand per demo day. One-day Rowing Lesson
Intro To Rowing Course

Taking into consideration that guide schools are often costly and time consuming. We offer a one-day rowing lesson conducive for two rowers. For the same price as a full day guided float trip. You get to spend a day with a guide who has mastered their craft. As well as will pass on their knowledge to you while rowing one of our private sections of water. This one-on-one opportunity is like no other. As well as is a great way to get behind the oars without committing to a full-blown guide school. Rod and Reel Combination
Orvis 101
Our Orvis 101 courses are a fan favorite. Free to the public. A perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon. The Orvis 101 courses cover all the fundamentals. Including a great introduction into the world of fly fishing! We meet at the Ugly Bug Fly Shop and walk down to City Park where we start with a basic casting instruction. From there, we walk back to the fly shop and give a crash course on the fly selection. As well as how to best navigate the bug bins. After that, we run over how to tie a nymph rig and its respective knots. Using patterns specific to our watershed. We wrap up by taking a moment to answer any and all questions that you may have! From access points to entomology, we’ve got you covered. Call the shop to see when our courses are offered! 8 People Per Group
Private Charter Events
On top of the slu of public events and courses we offer, we also offer all of these courses and events in the form of a private charter. If you have a large group interested in one of our events. We can host any and all events for your group in specific outside of the dates that we offer to the public. Whether it is a bachelor or bachelorette party. As well as kids groups, a family reunion, or even team building. We can chater any of our events to your specific wants and needs.
For chartered events we require a minimum of 8 people per group. However, there is no cap on the maximum number of participants. Chartered events without lodging. We ask that you book at least two months in advance. For chartered events with our lodging. We ask that you book at least four months in advance. Due to our lodging books out fast! If you are lodging with us, we have a private chef. The chef will provide meals for your days on the water. As well as can provide breakfast and dinner during your time in our lodging. Furthermore, if you are coming from out of State we can offer a shuttle service to and from the airport.
