THE REASON FLY FISHERMEN PUT FLIES ON THEIR HATS

By: Blake Jackson

We all know fly fishermen are notorious for putting flies on their hats for many different reasons. Many flies that are stuck to my hat are damaged and no longer fishable, so I stick them in the hat before eventually throwing them away. Others use their hats as a large bug patch.  This is a pretty good idea being we always have our hats on.  As a side bonus it helps hold your hat on your head on those windy Wyoming days. The downfall to this method is that if your hat blows off landing in the water, you are at risk of not only losing your favorite hat but also losing a couple hundred dollars worth of flies to the bottom of the river.

I am sure that many of you have a reason for keeping flies on your hat but I am guessing I am one of the few that has used one of those precious flies to fix a toilet at a very important family function. Last Thanksgiving while at family dinnING  we had a small plumbing issue. The

guest toilet was no longer flushing. As you can imagine, this became a big issue with twenty family members sharing one restroom. The chain that holds the rubber stopper in place had broken and we no longer had the connection needed to lift the stopper for adequate flushing. I had a Macgyver moment. I realized I could use a San Juan Worm that was in my hat to solve the problem. I took the worm and ran the hook through that horribly designed plastic chain and then embedded the hook into the rubber stopper. This provided a good connection allowing the toilet to be flushed.I was pretty impressed with my stroke of unique engineering, the

rest of the family was not nearly as impressed, but they did enjoy having a fully functional bathroom the rest of the day. This just goes to show that you never know when you are going to need one of those old nasty flies stuck in your hat.
